The Last Bell: Finishing the Year Strong

There's a particular feeling that lives in the days of June. It's equal parts exhaustion and pride — the kind you can only earn by showing up every single day - even those hard ones.

This year had plenty of hard ones. Whether it was navigating student disengagement, staffing pressures, curriculum overhauls, or just the quiet weight of feeling like you're never quite doing enough — educators carried a lot this year. And yet, here you are. Your students made it. You made it.

Before the summer break officially swallows everyone whole, take a moment to actually sit with that. The student who finally had a breakthrough in March. The class that surprised you. The lesson that bombed and the one you'll teach forever. The losses and the setbacks matter too — they're part of the story, and they deserve to be acknowledged, not glossed over.

Send Them Off Right: Fun Finishers for the Final Days

The last week doesn't have to be a chaotic countdown to freedom. Some of the most memorable classroom moments happen right here. A few ideas worth stealing:

For Middle School: Run a "Future Me" time capsule — students write a letter to their Grade 9 or Grade 10 self predicting what they'll care about, who they'll be. Seal them up. It's low-prep, surprisingly emotional, and sticks with kids for years.

For High School: Try a "Life Skills Bingo" debrief — budgeting basics, how to negotiate, how to write a professional email, what a T4 actually is. Make it funny, make it real. They'll use it before summer's over.

Now About That Classroom…

Let's be honest. The last two days feel like a quiet relief. We get to start peeling student work and those motivational posters (or jokes) off the walls. We get a pretty profound last wipe on that whiteboard. In fact, I tend to use it as a target and play a little floor hockey once the desks have moved out. Then comes the battle cry knowing we got through another one.

I relish the last few days of June. And I hope you do too.
